Torrenting for Dummies

*Disclaimer to the MPAA and RIAA: This is a work of fiction, nothing below here is true!*

Ok, now that we’ve got that out of the way, here is a how-to-guide to torrenting files, most popularly for TV shows, films and books, games, yes even photoshop!

First of all, what the f*** is a torrent?!

Well, a torrent is an extension for a BitTorrent file, which is a downloadable file that holds stuff; in this case, the latest season of Game of Thrones, or any media files such as music, tv, movies, books, games, apps etc.

There are two ways I torrent.

1. Finding good links

You can either just google “show/album/application” + “download,” in which case Google will find you a link where the file download is hosted. Find a good .mp4 link and click download and you’ll see it in your downloads folder.

2. Clients (No, not like that client)

The best way to find these torrents online is through torrent websites – The Pirate Bay and Kickass Ass Torrents just to name a few. Type in what you want in the search bar, e.g. “Game of Thrones Season 1”.

What’s different about this method is that you have to go and retrieve the torrent files off the Internet and download them through a torrent client (desktop application). I use two applications, called BitTorrent or Vuze, specifically created to receive torrent files and spit back out the final product like an album you can play on iTunes etc.

When using these websites, you want to download the file with the most “seeds.” A seed is a person who has the same torrent file you are trying to download. The reason we care about “seeds” is because it shows the file is reliable and most popular, aka less likely to be porn or a virus.

Pro-tip: Make sure you read the user comments and reviews before downloading. People will usually tell you if they are good links and have troubleshot the problem for you.

Click download and it should appear in your download bar in your client. Once the files are done downloading in your torrent application, make sure you click Turn Off Seeding. Seeding allows people to come and take bits and pieces of your files. You don’t want that. Your files should appear in your Downloads folder. Go there. Make sure you Quit your application entirely.

And now you have the new Drake album and you’re friends have to pay for it! Look at you!
